THE PRIESTHOOD: GIFT AND SACRIFICE

My dear people of God, this year, I have chosen to reflect with you on the importance of the gift of the priesthood and the role of this gift for the Church and humanity. The role of being a link between the human and divine, between God and his children. It is a welcome opportunity to reflect on the priestly ministry; on Christ’s priesthood and the ministry of participation of the human being in this singular priesthood, which is an epitome of Christ’s love for the Church and for humanity.

In this pastoral letter we shall discuss the priesthood of Jesus Christ which he has graciously shared with humans through the sacrament of Holy Orders. We shall examine this priesthood as a precious gift which like any other good gift calls for grateful acknowledgement and appreciation. This appreciation shows itself in the life and ministry of the priest (recipient of the gift) as a sacrifice in loving response to God for the gift of the priesthood. Without the life of sacrifice, the priesthood becomes incomplete and in fact empty.

22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR B)

Believers must show themselves, and persevere in true religious practice of God’s laws, not in external show of piety alone, says the Archbishop, Most Rev. Valerian M. Okeke. He urges also, that our fidelity to God’s laws, must flow more from the core of our beings, from our hearts, with the spirit of the law, than with rigid conformity, for obedience to God’s law will lead us to life and blessings from God. He prays the Lord to give us the grace to listen to and obey his laws, so that the power to save in God’s law be released in our lives. Amen.
